The fact is that making the desired end user customers aware of the products and services that the organisation has to offer is key in the first step for a successful business, to do this appropriate markerting channels need to the made use of.

Assuming the targets decide to purchase – the necessary and most efficient sales channels will then need to be employed to enable the marketplace to be able to purchase as many of the organisation’s products and services as possible.

It must be stated time and time again that it is the Sales and Marketing that is the heart and soul of any business – not the products and services that are on offer !

The last point made above is a tough one to take in for many business leaders that fall in love with what they have to offer to the public at large – [ i.e. their product or service]. When this happens, we see that the focus on presenting the message/brand to the marketplace that was originially targetted fall away from an external to internal direction of attention.

The process of marketing is used to effectively target just ‘who the products and services are for and then this is where the sales process takes over in order to effect the sale. As for the internet – it is a wonderful tool and the subject that I am being asked to speak about the most. In short – we have to use the internet as a supplementary tool to act in conjunction with the ’standard offline strategies and processes that have been developed.

The internet for sure is a wonderful Sales and Marketing tool but first, any company needs to have well defined messages for which they will be making use of the internet in order to convey that message.

When we look at how business has developed over time we can see that we are in a highly competitve market place and we can also see that there are so many people who have decided to startup and work in their own; small work from home businesses. This within itself is such a great thing but with that comes many challenges which we shall touch on in this article.

As a Business Marketing Strategy Consultant – one of the things that I am faced with and see in my working life is the fact that the Small and Medium Enterprise Business Owners are in fact experts at their particular field. That may be Makeup, Woodworking, Car Mechanics, Medical and the list could go on and on. One of the best things to do is to continually ask the question ‘who is my product and services for’ yes, that is who, in the singular. Although we do sell to groups of people and organisations, at the end of the day it is individuals that make purchasing decisions. Refining our business marketing message so that we are targetting our products and service for someone will enable us to meet the needs of the end user and; ultimately sell more.

This in line with core marketing strategies when considered will serve to assist take your business to the next level. As I continue to work with SMEs – the challenge is to get them to focus outwards and of course to get them to embrace the richness that the internet has to offer when considering it as a Marketing Channel.

The large corporations are conditioning and preparing the market for the smaller business owner to be able to more effectively and readily take advantage of making use of the internet as a Channel to Market.

Not that there is anything wrong with using any and/or all of the items above but what I often see is that this is normally done without the use of a coherent Business Marketing Strategy. Unfortunately, most do not see the reason for taking time up front in order to put time [and money] into :-

• Defining the message of your product/service
• Working on your brand
• Looking at Marketing Channels
• Going through the Marketing Segmentation exercise
• Pricing

… and, of course – the list could go on and on. The point is that large companies have qualified people in marketing departments working on these components all day long so, how important should this be for the small business owner. Of course this is business people such as myself come into play with being able to site down and to spend time with the business owner who is not skilled in marketing and to be able to help them to develop their core business marketing plans.

This is where we come to talk about the internet and how it should be viewed in the overall context of the business – I have run out of time, so will continue this in another post shortly.
