As we see marketing continuing to change in terms of the requirements of the end user clients, it is clear that the use of Mobile as a marketing channel is one aspect of business that cannot be ignored any longer. In our consultancy we are currently targeting the legal sector, identified various companies to work with as we see that this is a market sector that people are accessing via their mobile devices on a daily rising basis.

The point to make is that as you can imagine, the reasons why people will call law firms vary widely and more and more people are calling law firms from their Smart Phones & Mobile Devices. Now, if you ask the question regarding what the core competency of Legal Companies are it is of course in the legal expertise which they charge for. It is not about keeping up to date with the latest movements and updates when it comes to marketing on the internet which includes the strategic use of Mobile Websites and Apps.

With the vast majority of the legal firms websites that we survey not having a mobile optimized website the first step is to make contact and to get a mobile optimized website designed and developed. Generally speaking we advise clients to use their Mobile Website for bringing in new customers and clients into their marketing funnel, when we go on to develop and App this is typically used to connect with and keep in touch with those who have developed an ongoing relationship with the law firms.

The specific functionality of the mobile website and app for the legal profession will of course vary based on the actual service offering of the law firm. This is where our Marketing Consulting expertise comes into play as we consult with our clients before we design and develop any Mobile Website or App. This is to stress the point that we are Marketing Strategy Consultant and the use of the mobile website and app are an extension of the marketing strategy of the company we are dealing with.

In summary, this is about Marketing Strategy Development and challenging those who have been given marketing development opportunities within the law firm [typically they will not be marketing professionals] to embrace this particular marketing channel upon which they can use to expand and promote their business.

I had an interesting conversation today with a colleague [Mark Stonham] and we were discussing strategy development and the conversation, for a while became centred around the internet. It was then that I started to talk about my concept of how I feel the internet should be viewed and positioned as a key component of a company’s marketing strategy.

Those of you have read my thoughts before will know that I position the internet as a [nother] marketing channel that organisations can use to get their message out to the world at large, this channel can be used to collect market intelligence, survey customers as well as being used to deliver the products and services of the company to the client.

I also went on to stress the point

that I believe that not enough

attention is paid to segmenting the

internet itself as a channel to market.

What do I mean by this ? well – the internet itself provides multiple sub channels that can be used to communicate with – some of them are :-

  • blogging
  • article marketing
  • video marketing
  • email marketing
  • social media marketing

… it is through these marketing channel that we as marketers and business leaders need to make sure that we communicate effectively with those who are to become our customers. For that to happen those clients must be interfacing with us through specific sub internet channels.

It is here that I can see where many companies are potentially making costly strategy development errors in not taking the time up front to develop their internet channel marketing strategy. It is here that they will be told which internet sub channels their clients are interfacing with most and direct them with respect to how much effort, time and energy should be directed towards any one or multple internet marketing sub channel.

Having said that, I do understand that there are many social media marketing experts that push the idea that using this form of marketing on the internet is all that is necessary – needless to say, I disagree as …

Strategy should precedes execution

… and this stands true for marketing on the internet as it does if you were to be selling products and services into a new country.

As always, I hope you find this useful – and do feel free to hit the contact button above and get in touch if you would like to discuss business consulting, training, coaching, speaking or mentoring services.

The question that many small business owners as well as executives from some of the largest corporations in the world have asked and are asking is, ‘what about the internet’ ?? …

[display_podcast]

… My response is that the internet is to be viewed as a marketing channel for the corporation.

That is as a marketing channel to promote the company’s message through as well as using this particular channel to possibly deliver products and/or services to the end user client.

As many organisations are struggling to fully incorporate the internet into the core business strategies, I have devised the Internet Channel Marketing seminar which focusses on the main things that executives need to be aware of in order to go forward and develop their strategies with fully incorporating the internet.

I say that to mean that the internet should not be viewed as an ‘add on but as a key component of the corporate strategy, for this to happen of course, there will need to be certain changes to the organisation both in terms of structure as well as mindset.

If this topic is of interest to you – view the video above and – if I can help you by answering any of your questions, running a seminar, consulting or if you just fancy a chat !!! Feel free to get in touch.

It is very interesting for me as a Business Marketing Strategy consultant to see how much of a shift of an emphasis

[display_podcast]

there has been in terms of corporations focussing on making use of internet marketing consultants. We know that a large percentage of the cost of getting a product to the end user is taken up in distribution channel management and dynamics and; this is an area that I spend a lot of time consulting in. However, with that said the internet is being used to assist with distribution channel management as well as in pushing products through various other channels to get to the end user.

So what should companies [large and small] do in order to get going with fully incorporating the internet into their overall business marketing strategies ?? I would advise to stop and consider two aspects :-

  • The internet as a promotion channel
  • The internet as a consumption channel

That is to say, ensure that there are two distinct strategies on the table for tackling how the organisation communicates with the end user in order to get the message of the product and/or service out to the world at large using the internet. Second, consider how existing products/service may be modified in order to allow the user customer to sample or fully consume the company’s offerings via the internet.

These are but two of the items that I consider when going through the thought process of developing a marketing strategy and using the internet as a primary marketing channel.

Internet marketing training programs are growing in demand as more and more corporations are correctly placing the internet in its correct

[display_podcast]

position in terms of the overall business strategy development activities that will determine where the company is going.

The question is, where is the internet to be placed in terms of the development of the corporations marketing strategy and the answer is as a marketing channel.

Channel marketing is a component of the ever popular marketing mix, more commonly known as the 4 P’s and comes under the Promotion and Place P’s :-

  1. Promotion is for getting the message out to the world at large
  2. Place is for the channel where the user purchases the product and/or service

For the small business owner and work from home entrepreneur – I have developed the Internet And Direct Marketing blueprint which is an internet marketing training course designed to give the internet marketing entrepreneur the tools to market their product making full use of the internet.

As for the corporates – they should look at the internet in two ways :-

  • As a marketing channel to promote the products and services of the organisation
  • As a distribution channel from which the end user customer will end up consuming the products/services as developed by the organisation

If you are reading this as a result of you wanting to gain some expertise in making use of the internet as a marketing channel, check out the internet and direct marketing blueprint.

Yesterday, on my weekly Business Radio Program where I provide quality information on Business, Sales …..

[display_podcast]

…. Marketing, The Internet, Globalisation and more !! I made a brief book review of Sheila Elliott’s ‘My Business Is My Business [Learn How To Earn A Fortune’] as the content is bang in line with the theme of the program. Listen to the podcast above for the summary review but here are the main points covered [which are based upon the chapters of the book] :-

  • Why Do You Want To Start A Business ?
  • Putting Your Vision Into A Strategic Marketing Plan
  • Exuding/Creating Confidence In Your Business
  • Financing Your Business
  • Running A Customer Focussed Business

… in line with previous week’s discussions and our review of Tom Peter’s ‘The Brand You 50’ and the specific discussion on :-

  • What do I want to be ?
  • What do I want to stand for ?
  • Does my work matter ?
  • Am I making a difference ?

… [this is taken from page 18] >>> in line with that; if you’ve listened the program you will be familiar that I am always talking about the importance of

  • Categories
  • Segments
  • Channels

i.e. all products and service fit within a particular category of the market place, those products and services are sold to specific segments of the marketplace and finally those products and services must by definition pass through a marketing channel.

Sheila Elliott’s book ‘My Business Is My Business’ is spot on and very relevant in today’s economic climate, I will be completing the review sometime soon – in the meantime, do yourself a favour. Grab a copy !!!

Let me know if you have any thoughts, comments or business collaboration ideas

I gave a presentation the other week about the process of marketing and the internet. It was interesting to see the reaction and anticipation of the audience when I got through some 30 minutes of the business marketing strategy information output without really going into any real depth about the internet.

The point that I am always trying to make is how to view the internet as a part of the overal business marketing strategy of any organisation. Of course all large and small companies know that they need to have a website, this is where I see so many problems in relation to the development and execution of a business internet marketing strategy. That is to say, there often is no strategy – the website is ‘thrown onto the internet because the Small Business Owner has been told that they must have a website [which is true – I would say].

As I develop key Business Marketing Strategies from conception to implementation it is the message of the organisation that needs to be clearly understood by the business owner before that message can be communicated by any medium. That is where it comes to the message that I am constantly putting forth …

View the internet as a Marketing Channel

  • If your message is not clear
  • If you have not defined your key Marketing Segments
  • If you have not identified the most appropriate Channels To Market
  • If you have not taken the time to define the Profile of your Ideal Client.

… And of course the list could go on with all of the components that a Strategic Business Internet Marketing Consultant [the function that I provide] bring to any business. As you would hire a chef to prepare the food in your restaurant [and not try to learn how to cook yourself] – hire in a Business Marketing Strategy Consultant to help take your business to the next level.

Any comments, let me know, if  you need any consulting – get in touch.

Business Marketing & Strategy

Your business, my business and overy other person’s business out there in the world at large lives and dies by the strength of its sales and outbound marketing. While it is at times easy to get focussed inwards working on the day to day business activities – it is imperative to keep an outward looking marketing, strategic view when it comes to thinking about and dealing with ones products and services.

One of the best things to do is to continually ask the question ‘who is my product and services for’ yes, that is who, in the singular. Although we do sell to groups of people and organisations, at the end of the day it is individuals that make purchasing decisions. Refining our business marketing message so that we are targetting our products and service for someone will enable us to meet the needs of the end user and; ultimately sell more.

This in line with core marketing strategies when considered will serve to assist take your business to the next level. As I continue to work with SMEs – the challenge is to get them to focus outwards and of course to get them to embrace the richness that the internet has to offer when considering it as a Marketing Channel.

More on this in another post, let me know if you have any comments or if there is indeed anything I can do for you to assist taking your business forward.

Stephen C Campbell

Recently I gave a presentation to a group of business owners and personal development experts at the Leadership Academy Mastermind Group in London which was co founded by Steve Oxlade. I covered many specific aspects of the marketing strategy process that I use when consulting with businesses to often take their business ideas from conception to implementation.

As a marketing consultant who started his career working in Research and Development having studied electrical and electronic engineering as an undergraduate; I have a strong foundation in technology and am always looking for ways to use the new technologies to make business more efficient. One of the questions I posed to the group was – which comes first, economic growth or technological growth. For the purpose of this post we cannot get deep into the economics that defines the answer, however the correct response is that economic growth is preceeded by technological growth. The example can be given where a company purchases a machine to perform the work that is ordinarily carried out by 10 people, the new machine now requires one person to operate it. Now the other nine people can be used by the business to develop new skills in order to perform additional tasks. The new technology will allow the company to produce more output when all things are considered.

The point to this is to get businesses to take a fresh and different look at the internet and how to use the internet within ones business strategy. Most small work from home business and other companies know that they should have a website however, in most cases that website is not positioned as a key part of the overall sales and marketing strategy of the organisation. When designing business strategies I spend a significant amount of time with client working on the concept of ‘internet channel marketing’ that is :- getting business owners to view the internet as a marketing channel to build and establish their brand, to connect with other businesses in the same industry.

The technology that is developing in the form of the internet (internet marketing) should be viewed as the most wonderful technological advancement that all businesses can use to build their brands and ultimately increase revenues. The key is to have someone in your organisation who has the expertise to take advantage of blogging, podcasting, video marketing, forums, directories and all the other components that are necessary in order to use the internet effectively within your business. If you are are small organisation, the thing to do is not to try to learn all that is needed but to hire a consultant as appropriate in order to get moving in the shortest period of time possible in terms of using the internet as a marketing channel to drive your business. In this way the company can focus on their core competencies such as enhancing their skills and getting into business, sales and marketing negotiations with potential clients and partners.

Interested in hearing if you have any comments on this, you are always welcome to get in touch if there is anything I can do to help you drive your business forward.

Best,

Stephen C Campbell
