goal setting in business

Today I am considering the topic of Goal Setting In Business as this is something that I am asked about frequently and is a skill that many business people do not possess and; as a consequence the process of setting goals and following them through to a conclusion (and then setting new ones) is not well understood.

This is where Self Development meets Business Strategy and in my experience and opinion, Goal Setting is a skill that all business people should seriously consider learning and incorporating into their day to day business activities.

You may ask why? If you already know what you wish to accomplish in your business (and personal life) then why do you actually need to set a goal. The answer lies in the fundamentals operation our brains, which is our control tower and the part of us that directs everything we do – that is both at the Conscious and Non Conscious level of our being. The majority of what we do is fundamentally determined at the Non (Sub) Conscious level …

The sequence in which you brush your teeth
The way you dress
The digestion of your food (try digesting your food consciously and see how far you get!)
The way you fold your arms
The control of everything whilst you sleep

Now, when we go through the Goal Setting business process we essentially program in our desired outcome into that part of us that never stops working.

The sad fact is that …

If you do not know where you are going, any road will get you there!

During latest business trip to India I addressed business school faculty as well as MBA students on the importance of Goal Setting. All the top performers have mentors and coaches and move their circumstances forward through the constant use of goals.

Yes, goal are extremely important in business – if you are not using them personally and professionally, I would suggest you take a close look at how you can – now.

The question of how to make use of emotional intelligence with businesses is one that is being asked by people found all over the world. It is the seperation of Personal And Self Development from business that it looked at which up until recent years was the way to look at things.

Now of course, we are looking at the most successful leaders and managers [see the book Primal Leadership] and noting that it is something more than their academic accomplishments or their straight line IQ neural connection but; their ability to adapt to and connect with other people.

Emotional Intelligence and the associated Social Intelligence is a critical attribute that is to be embraced by leaders as it is the ability of the manager or leader to get other individuals in the team to execute tasks and to be willing to come up with new ideas.

As we continue to live in this technologically advanced world with organisations looking for the competitive edge, it looks as though this focus on [some say] the more ‘woolly aspects of our skillset could well be the component that sets one manager apart from another.

I’ve felt privileged to have the requisite skillset to be able to combine Business Strategy Development and Self Development skills in order to help organisations and individuals to move foward by first understanding and getting in touch with Emotional & Social Intelligence.

Feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss this or any other business development matter.

Highly motivated and inspiring coach, helped me and guided me throughout the whole process with patience and caring. The coaching has helped me turn my life around – and get me out of the “I can’t because mentality …” I have overcome fears and I am not afraid to fail. There is no such thing as failure – just feedback. [who taught us about failure anyway – they got it so wrong].

A big thank you to Stephen C Campbell for giving me the tools to get myself free.

Unlike some other topics in life, Self Develoment which includes Goal Setting, The Law Of Attraction the use the Subconscious Mind requires consant and never ending improvement. We need to adopt the Kaizen Suru verbs of the Japanese which means to improve.
We created the You-Can-Be whoever or whatever you choose to be membership (http://www.you-can-be.com/members/) site to cater for those who want to continue their Self Development learning as opposed to those who read a book once or who attend a seminar and end up making no changes in their lives.

Because of our programming and the need to fit in and be accepted it takes time to create new neural connections which will result in new habit patterns and hence changes in our actions and therefore results. To take advantage of this valuable resource, take a look at http://www.you-can-be.com/members/.

I am constantly amazed at talking to individuals who have read a Self Development book or have been to a seminar sometime in the past and; for some reason believe that that’s it. Self Development, Goal Setting and moving towards the life on our dreams should be constants in our lives. I have created the You Can Be whoever or whatever you choose to be membership site here http://www.you-can-be.com/members/ to provide a constant, monthly stream of fress, topical information to help individuals take their lives to the next level.

In my coaching amd seminar programs I understand more and more how much individuals seem to be part of what I call the Social Hypnosis, where we settle for less than the best we can be.

The theme I push for our Self Development programs is to get in touch with your Subconscious Mind, Invoke the Law Of Attraction and create that which you see in your mind. Go check out the You-Can-Be memberhsip site, it’s free to join – details at http://www.you-can-be.com/members/.

How do you live and conduct your life ? are you one of the vast majority of the population who say “I’ll Just Go With The Flow” ? Throughout our schooling we are taught to follow the crowd, get a job and all the rest of it.

In society the few individuals who break free of the herd mentality and accomplish great things are the ones we call successful. However when we examine things, there is actually no way to stand out and be one of those who are admired unless we stand out and be counted. We will be dealing with this in the next seminar on July 15th details at http://www.you-can-be.com/.

Now, back to the subject line – going with the flow as most of us do means that on closer inspection we stay in the job we do not love, we stay in the relationship we know is right for us, we put up with the bodies which we do not like when we look in the mirror and the list goes on. Breaking free and being the person who you want to be or doing the things we dream of takes guts and character.

Self Development material (book, tapes, CDs & DVDs) are amongst the highest category of sales, even more astonishing is the data which shows that much of the material stays on the shelves of individuals or never get properly consumed. Not going with the flow will lead you closer to being, doing and having the things which you want and deserve.

Goal setting and being dedicated to Self and Personal Development takes real character and guts, people will question you and try to get you to abandon your dream.

In the next You-Can-Be seminar (see http://www.you-can-be.com/ ) I will be dealing with Goal Setting, Quantum Physics, Neuro Science and related topics. All of which is designed to give individuals tools and techniques to break free from ‘the flow’ and be whoever or whatever they choose to be.

If you are in the South West of the UK – come along and spend the day immersing yourself in planning for the rest of your life.

I am often asked why I spend so much time teaching people about the Subconscious mind as well as focussing on Neuroscience as an integral part of the Self Development programs which I produce and lecture on.

This can of course be a very deep and technical subject and I intend to write a few posts on this subject. Our Subconscious Minds works day and night, 24 hours a day and is our obedient servant. It is now estimated that Our Subconscious is responsible for over 95% of how we act, walk, talk and percieve the world in which we live. To grasp this, just consider the gallons of blood which is now gushing throughout your veins and; the food which is being digested. All these so called automatic functions are being taken care of by your your Subconscious.

Thoughts of fear, lack, poverty, failure will be acted upon the Our Subconscious as thoughts of desire, abundance and achievement will. Our Subconscious takes instructions from our Conscious and so if we are constantly engaged in negative conversations, surround ourselves with ‘enery vampires’,  people who moan and complain constantly then we end up acting upon the impulses which we give to ourselves.

In relation to Goal Setting our job is to pass to Our Subconscious  mind the exact picture of what we want to Be, Do and Have in our lives. Take a blank piece of paper and write our your Goals and Desires for say the Relationship and Financial areas of your life, write at least ten specific desires for each. Read them at least once a day, I recommend before you go to bed and upon rising.

Do this EVERYDAY for at least one week and see what difference it makes to your thoughts and actions, and let me know how you get on.

Remember if you cannot find time to stop and sit down and write out your Goals and Desires then I challenge you as to how serious you are about predicting your future by creating it. In closing I’d like to leave you with this oh so simple yet so deep statement (of which we will go into another time) of Ella Wheeler Wilcoxas she touches on Our Subconscious and the laws of the universe/Quantum Physics.

“You never can tell what a thought will do
In bringing you hate or love-
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings
Are swifter than carrier doves.
They follow the law of the universe-
Each thing creates its kind,
And they speed O’er the track to bring you back
Whatever went out from your mind.”

Yes, we become what we think about. Be careful what you feed your mind, turn of the television, listen to uplifting lectures, read books which take your life to the next level and make the effort to associate yourself with those people who can help you.

Comments alwyas welcome.

This is based on a quote which really resonated with me taken from Jack Canfield’s Success Principles lectures. The full quote goes like this :-

“Winners are those people who make a habit of doing the things losers are uncomfortable doing”.

This quote is now embedded firmly in my Subconscious and I use it to remind me of how to proceed when I am looking to move towards some of the ambitious Goals which I have set for myself. It makes me go the extra mile, learn new things everyday, invest in my Self Development on a regular basis, minimise the amount of time I spend in front of the television and be prepared to ‘different as necessary and depart from the Status Quo. This was the decision I made some 7 years ago when I left employment with Hewlett Packard and now I am predicting the future as far as my career is concerned – by creating it. As I study the likes of Bill Gates, Alan Sugar, John Assaraf and Oprah Winfrey I understand that their outstanding success can be put down to the willingness to do the things the majority of the population are not prepared to do. The vast majority of the population are in what I term the “Social Hypnosis” and not really, really knowing what their purpose is or here they are going (as determined by some basic questioning at the start of any coaching session).

So, the question I have for you is, how is your life? are you doing what you love to do? in other words :-

if you knew that you could not fail what is it that you would be doing?

and, when is “now” a good time to change? Hope these few words will serve to prompting you into action. As always, any thoughts or comments – do let me know as they are always welcome.

To your success.

How Is Your Self Concept?  Part Of The Foundation To Your Self DevelopmentSo how do you stay calm, composed and maintain self concept in a tough environment? Here are some tips you may to consider as a starter guide to Self Development, this is written bearing in mind that we all live and interact in circumstances which may not be conducive to us growing and improving. The decision therefore has to made to avoid all things which weaken us as these all work to lower our Self Concept, a high and strong Self Concept being critical in underpinning our Self Development. Here are some examples :-

Negative Work Environment : Beware of “dog eat dog” theory where everyone else is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. No one will appreciate your contributions even if you miss lunch and dinner, and stay up late. Most of the time you get to work too much without getting help from people concerned. Stay out of this, it will ruin your self concept. Competition is at stake anywhere. Be healthy enough to compete, but in a healthy competition that is.

Other People’s Behavior : Bulldozers, brown nosers, gossipmongers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, people walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, patronizers, sluffers… all these kinds of people will pose bad vibes for your self concept, as well as to your Self Development scheme.

Changing Environment : You can’t be a green bug on a brown field. Changes challenge our paradigms. It tests our flexibility, adaptability and alters the way we think. Changes will make life difficult for awhile, it may cause stress but it will help us find ways to improve our selves. Change will be there forever, we must be susceptible to it.

Past Experience : It’s okay to cry and say “ouch!” when we experience pain. But don’t let pain transform itself into fear. It might grab you by the tail and swing you around. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson.

Negative World View : Look at what you’re looking at. Don’t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self concept, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Determination Theory : The way you are and your behavioral traits is said to be a mixed end product of your inherited traits (genetics), your upbringing (psychic), and your environmental surroundings such as your spouse, the company, the economy or your circle of friends. You have your own identity. If your father is a failure, it doesn’t mean you have to be a failure too. Learn from other people’s experience, so you’ll never have to encounter the same mistakes.

Sometimes, you may want to wonder if some people are born leaders or positive thinkers. NO. Being positive, and staying positive is a choice. Building self concept and drawing lines for Self Development is a choice, not a rule or a talent.

In life, its hard to stay tough specially when things and people around you keep pulling you down. When we get to the battle field, we should choose the right luggage to bring and armors to use, and pick those that are bullet proof. Life’s options give us arrays of more options. Along the battle, we will get hit and bruised. And wearing a bullet proof armor ideally means ‘self change’. The kind of change which comes from within. Voluntarily. Armor or Self Change changes 3 things: our attitude, our behavior and our way of thinking.
Building self concept will eventually lead to Self Development if we start to become responsible for who we are, what we have and what we do. Its like a flame that should gradually spread like a brush fire from inside and out. When we develop self concept, we take control of our mission, values and discipline. Self concept brings about Self Development, true assessment, and determination. So how do you start putting up the building blocks of self concept? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. A positive way of living will help you build self concept, your starter guide to Self Development.

That’s all for now, look forward to ‘speaking with you again.
