This is a critical question that is being answered on a daily basis by the most successful corporations around the world. This extremely important topic is one that is relevant for every business …

… no matter what industry or size of organisation. In other words the question to be answered is :-

what is you Promotional Channel Marketing Strategy ?

… of course, we know that Channel Marketing can readily be split into two main categories, that of delivering your product and/or service to the market place and; the specific channel used to promote your company’s products / services.

In some cases you can use the same channel for both consumption and delivery but in many cases there will need to be a careful blend of pushing the message of the organisation through specific channels and, using various channels more that others and therefore driving customers to take specific actions in order to get them into the marketing funnel.

One of the best things you can do today is to stop and take a blank piece of paper and consider the blend of channels that you are actively using the promote your products and services to the world at large.

The blend is critically important as the blend that you use will be based on the results of your market segmentation activities in line with who you are selling to and where they congregate in terms of what the best medium is to use to deliver your message to them.

This is but one small part of a component of developing a business strategy.

When I start a Business Consultation session I introduce my clients (or refresh their minds) to Category Marketing. Unfortunately most small business and home business do not stop to take time up front to work on Business Planning and laying a solid foundation on which to base their businesses. Failure to do this invariably leads to problems and complications further on down the road.  So what is this category marketing about ?

You as the business owner should take time to sit down and plan out which category of the market your product or service fits into. What is meant by this ? consider the manufacturer’s of cars – when they are planning to produce a new car they determine the category of car which will be produced at the design stage. That is to say, the car could be a Mini Car, a Sports Utility Vehicle, a Multu Purpose Vehicle, a Sports Car, a Soft Top convertible and so the list can goes on. A car is not just a car – the master category of car (your product or service) can and must be split up to provide a solid foundation from which to launch your business.

To define the category for your business, take a blank piece of paper, consider the example of the cars and try to come up with at least five different categories in which your product or service can be placed. You may be a plumber but where does your area of speciality lie ? bathroom, kitchens, central heating ? Let’s take the example of a motor mechanic -when building your business it may well serve you to determine where your speciality lies – do you work on brakes, fuel injection, exhausts, bodywork and the list could go on.

It is hoped that this brief post will serve as  a catalyst to get you to move toward thinking like a business stategist as you work on the foundation of your business.

One of the first things I do when working with a new client is to establish what they believe is their Compelling Value Proposition Or Unique Selling Point. Of course this is all marketing speak which the majority of small business owners are not familiar with.

In everyday language the question I lead them to answer is “why should a customer want to do business with me?” or “

what is so special about my product or service”.  The answer to this leads us on to lots of different outcomes as we look at

marketing channels, customer satisfaction, customer retention and so on, some of which I will cover in future posts. But for

you the reader, business owner or someone with a business idea – get a blank piece of paper and write down the answer to

this question.

For example : I (Steve Campbell) have conducted business in around 20 countries throughout Europe, the Far East and

spent much time in the U.S. (which I absolutely loved) as well as living in the Far East (Japan) for over 2 1/2 years. This

coupled with my experience of running my own organization, experience of customers from a wide range of cultures

coupled with a strong academic foundation and expertise in Internet Marketing and developing technologies gives my customers confidence that I can bring all that background to help them with their business.

It is satisfying for me having come from a Research and Development background and a base of marketing in the

computer industry to now work across a wide range of market sectors.

In closing, if you can answer the question as to why someone would benefit from doing business with you, then you will be

in a muich stronger position to start telling people about it and providing your product or service to the world.

Good luck with your business and marketing, let me know if I can be of assistance to you.

Feel free to post your comments and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

I am often asked why I spend so much time teaching people about the Subconscious mind as well as focussing on Neuroscience as an integral part of the Self Development programs which I produce and lecture on.

This can of course be a very deep and technical subject and I intend to write a few posts on this subject. Our Subconscious Minds works day and night, 24 hours a day and is our obedient servant. It is now estimated that Our Subconscious is responsible for over 95% of how we act, walk, talk and percieve the world in which we live. To grasp this, just consider the gallons of blood which is now gushing throughout your veins and; the food which is being digested. All these so called automatic functions are being taken care of by your your Subconscious.

Thoughts of fear, lack, poverty, failure will be acted upon the Our Subconscious as thoughts of desire, abundance and achievement will. Our Subconscious takes instructions from our Conscious and so if we are constantly engaged in negative conversations, surround ourselves with ‘enery vampires’,  people who moan and complain constantly then we end up acting upon the impulses which we give to ourselves.

In relation to Goal Setting our job is to pass to Our Subconscious  mind the exact picture of what we want to Be, Do and Have in our lives. Take a blank piece of paper and write our your Goals and Desires for say the Relationship and Financial areas of your life, write at least ten specific desires for each. Read them at least once a day, I recommend before you go to bed and upon rising.

Do this EVERYDAY for at least one week and see what difference it makes to your thoughts and actions, and let me know how you get on.

Remember if you cannot find time to stop and sit down and write out your Goals and Desires then I challenge you as to how serious you are about predicting your future by creating it. In closing I’d like to leave you with this oh so simple yet so deep statement (of which we will go into another time) of Ella Wheeler Wilcoxas she touches on Our Subconscious and the laws of the universe/Quantum Physics.

“You never can tell what a thought will do
In bringing you hate or love-
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings
Are swifter than carrier doves.
They follow the law of the universe-
Each thing creates its kind,
And they speed O’er the track to bring you back
Whatever went out from your mind.”

Yes, we become what we think about. Be careful what you feed your mind, turn of the television, listen to uplifting lectures, read books which take your life to the next level and make the effort to associate yourself with those people who can help you.

Comments alwyas welcome.
