Recently the business week top 50 companies in terms of business innovation list was released which made interesting reading. As a Business Marketing Strategy Consultant I took a look at the list to see what the key learnings were for me to take and to incorporate into my day to day Consulting, Speaking and Training
activities. For businesses of all sizes, Small and Medium Enterprises as well as large Corporates – we can see that those companies that did not rest on their laurels are the ones that surge forward.

Your business, my business and overy other person’s business out there in the world at large lives and dies by the strength of its sales and outbound marketing. While it is at times easy to get focussed inwards working on the day to day business activities – it is imperative to keep an outward looking marketing, strategic view when it comes to thinking about and dealing with ones products and services.
One of the best things to do is to continually ask the question ‘who is my product and services for’ yes, that is who, in the singular. Although we do sell to groups of people and organisations, at the end of the day it is individuals that make purchasing decisions. Refining our business marketing message so that we are targetting our products and service for someone will enable us to meet the needs of the end user and; ultimately sell more.
This in line with core marketing strategies when considered will serve to assist take your business to the next level. As I continue to work with SMEs – the challenge is to get them to focus outwards and of course to get them to embrace the richness that the internet has to offer when considering it as a Marketing Channel.

Working on your brand
Looking at Marketing Channels
Going through the Marketing Segmentation exercise
… and, of course – the list could go on and on. The point is that large companies have qualified people in marketing departments working on these components all day long so, how important should this be for the small business owner. Of course this is business people such as myself come into play with being able to site down and to spend time with the business owner who is not skilled in marketing and to be able to help them to develop their core business marketing plans.

As every small business operating in the bustling economy of London from time to time needs outside help.
